As a woodworker, one of the most rewarding experiences is seeing a family having dinner at the table we built, made from wood that would have been discarded. After Hurricane Irma, Shawn and Abigail recovered a beautiful Cubanmahogany that we milled and they took home to dry. Key West Woodworks, is a family owned and operated custom woodworking shop. Located on the docks of Safe Harbour Marina since 1986, our shop builds most anything custom ranging from fine furniture, fine art assemblage, yacht interiors, bar tops, and custom carved signage with 23K gold leaf. Housed at Key West Woodworks are the many local exotic tropical hardwoods of Key West – Cuban Mahogany, Tropical Almond, Sapadilla, Tabebuia, African Cork, and Jamaica Dogwood.

Salvaging Treasure
Dining table, not dumpster.
Our work begins with the tree, sometimes a fallen choice and sometimes an act of nature and hurricanes. With a commercial band sawmill we are able to reveal the beauty of the wood residing in the tree and give the tree a more noble ending than the landfill. After milling, the planks are moved into an outdoor drying yard on the edge of a Mangrove forest and air-dried for one to two years. Presently our predominant dry species is Cuban Mahogany, described by Fine Woodworking Magazine as “ the finest mahogany in the world if you can find it”. We also have Tropical Almond, Sapodilla, Jamaica Dogwood, and Wild Tamarind. Sizes range up to 26” in width, 1 to 4 inches in thickness, up to 12 inches wide and around 80 to 100 inches in length. When we are able to use the wood we have salvaged, there is no environmental impact from the rotting tree and we are not importing a species from as far away as Africa.
